Making healthy choices and goals is an ongoing process. Even if you’re already an avid exerciser and healthy eater, there are things you can do to keep your exercise routine interesting and fine-tune your food plan. Choose a new health goal (or two or three) for 2009 and stick with it throughout the year. You’ll notice the difference in how you feel!
Nutrition goals
Eat healthy on the go: When you’re busy, it can be easy to fall into nutrition traps you know aren’t good for you. Make it your goal to eat well no matter what. Save time by stocking up on healthy snacks, buying pre-cut or pre-grated vegetables and by doubling recipes and freezing leftovers for quick, handy (and healthy!) meals when you need them.
Be restaurant savvy: Stick to your meal plan and still enjoy dinners out with friends and family by making it a goal to make smart ordering decisions at restaurants. Watch your portions, order appetizers instead of entrees, ask for sauces or dressings on the side, avoid anything breaded or fried and order off menu when you need to.
Exercise goals
Make sure your routine is well rounded: If you’re always on the treadmill, in the weight room or at the yoga studio, make it your goal to mix things up this year. A comprehensive fitness routine includes aerobic exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises. Make time in your routine for all three.
Give yourself mini-challenges throughout the day: Make it your goal to find ways to exercise all day long, not just when you’re on the walking trail or at the gym. Add extra minutes to your exercise routine by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to the next transit stop or parking at the far end of the parking lot every day.
